I said I was gonna be better about blogging. So I haven't been. Sorry. Here are some old updates, Wednesday and Thursday the 15th&16th.
My day Wednesday wasn't all that interesting. Just suuuper busy. Kyle got to the church late, at about 10:30, so we didn't have time for our Bible study, which is supposed to be from 10-11. That kinda bummed me out. But it wasn't his fault he was late; he moved in with his Brasilian family last night, too, and they offered him a ride but were late getting him to church this morning. It's all good! Anywho, we checked over each other's Portuguese homework and went to class as usual from 11am-1pm. After class, we're supposed to have our intern meeting with Zane, the coordinator. So we go to this place with delicious food. We usually get takeout from there. Somehow the communication wires got crossed today, however, and we ended up getting our food on plates. Oops! Anyway, so we ate at the restaurant as fast as we could and then came back for our meeting. In the meeting, Zane kinda implied that we were moving too slow on our huge project (the hypothetical church plant for São Gonçalo), and gave us some pointers to speed it up. From then on, we just worked on Children's Ministry stuff for April, who's the missionary over all of that. We're copying Portuguese children's Bible stories into word documents from books and then making cutouts of the pictures from the books to illustrate the stories. There are zillions of pictures and we don't have some of the Bible stories, so that's been going much more slowly than any of us realized it would. In fact, I juuuust quit working on it at 8 that night. It's fun though; especially copying the stories, because it's doing a lot to expand my Portuguese vocabulary.
I moved in with my Brasilian family Wednesday night! It is a completely different world. My host mother, M, loooooves watching novellas (soap operas, basically). Brasilians take their novellas VERY seriously! They LOVE watching them! So I watched my first novella with M Wednesday night. It was fun! One of their daughters, R, wanted to put the subtitles in English for me, but it would only do Portuguese subtitles. That was ok, though, because then I could both see and hear the words in real-time so I understood a lot more than I would have otherwise. We then all watched the soccer game together; the American Cup game between Brasil and Ecuador. Man was that an experience with Brasilians!!! They're crazy about their futebol (soccer). They were yelling and jumping up and down! Luckily, Brasil won the game. During the second half of the game I moved to the kitchen table to do my Portuguese homework (it was like 11:30! -- Brasilians stay up a lot later than I would, were I given the choice!) and M came and kinda read over my shoulder and helped me with the sentences I was writing. They're such a great family! So kind and so generous!
Thursday: We had Bible Study and Portuguese class in the morning, as usual. Portuguese class was good. I'm getting waaaay better at putting together sentences, which makes me super happy! It has helped me a lot while living with the Brasilians, though most of the time I feel like a baby; I can't communicate what I want/need/want to do. They are very attentive to me, and I wish I knew how to properly and politely tell them that I don't wanna be a bother, and I can mostly take care of myself. But they're really helpful and so kind. I went to see the premier of Harry Potter with one of the daughters, E after working at the church til 8!! That was so much fun! Premiers in Brasil are even crazier than they are at home! Everyone is standing super close to one another, and did so from as early as 5 or 6pm to 11:30. But the movie was great! I caught myself yelling in English right along with the people who were yelling in Portuguese, which was pretty entertaining. I got some strange looks. Ha. It's all good though! The movie was great. My host-sister, E, and I cried together when... oh. I guess I shouldn't spoil the ending for you... Ha ha!
I realize that it's July 28th and I'm just now posting this. New update coming, telling all about living with a Brasilian family!
I love you all!
